Given the existing 220 models in the group, Volkswagen has made standardizing the pillar of his strategy, with already recorded several modular platforms (whose first four-cylinder engine in the world to cylinder deactivation (ACT)). The last has the name of MQB. This is multibrand platform the segments A0 to B high-volume , other words the Polo to the Passat through the Golf. His strong point are a mounting position identical for all engines, from gasoline and diesel engines up to full electric, through the hybrid versions, and natural gas.

To achieve this exploit, Volkswagen has undergone profound change his family of petrol engines. Thus, engineers pivots the cylinder head, then adapted the layout of the main connections and the inclination of the groups to other engines. In this way, the inlet side is now always at the front
and the exhaust side at the rear. In the process, the pattern of motor flange / gearbox has been standardized, to use the same boxes for multiple engine families, in all categories of torque. 
The calculation is simple at Volkswagen: high shares of common components allow achieve economies of scale. Result of these efforts, the group was able to reduce by 88% the number of variants of engines and gearboxes in the MQB platform. It may thus produce automobiles at prices suited to market worldwide, and offer a much wider. This is also a way to put new and sustainable technologies within the reach of new car buyers in emerging markets. Moreover, it is easier to adapt and to local needs. 

Moreover, the MQB platform helps limit weight gain. So we take the example of the Golf, despite significant advances in comfort and safety of the vehicle, the weight of the next generation (the seventh) will remain at the fourth generation (1997-2003). At the same time, the arrival of the first models based MQB will be accompanied by a score of innovations in security and connectivity previously reserved for upper segments.
