LG has announced that it has developed the world’s largest OLED TV panel, 55-inch OLED TV panel measuring just 5-mm thick. The world's largest OLED panel will receive its first public demonstration at CES in Las Vegas starting January 9th.which the company will have on display at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) TV panel is reportedly 55 inches in diameter, and has a higher contrast ratio and wider color gamut than LCD TVs.
“Although OLED technology is seen as the future of TV display, the technology has been limited to smaller display sizes and by high costs, until now,” Dr. Sang Beom Han, CEO and executive vice-president of LG Display, said in a statement. “LG Display's 55-inch OLED TV panel has overcome these barriers."
LG overcame the cost hurdle by adopting a different technology for its display. While smaller OLED displays typically employ what’s known as Low Temperature Poly Silicon (LTPS), which uses amorphous silicon, the new 55-inch panel has Oxide Thin Film Transistor (TFT) technology, which uses the much cheaper oxide. The company said that Oxide TFT produces the same image quality of high performance LTPS but at a significantly reduced cost.
The company claims that this television is able to achieve contrast ratio of over 100, 000:1 with wider color gamut than LCD panels. In addition, LG has achieved high velocity reaction to electric signals with this panel that is over 1000 times faster than LCD panels, eliminating after image (ghost image). Lastly, with an advantage of using OLED technology, LG has been able to confine the thickness of the TV to just 5mm. We will have to wait until CES in January next year to get the dope on some important stuff like screen resolution, availability and pricing.
Of course, LG hasn’t given a cost estimate for the new TV just yet.
All of these features are packed into a casing that’s thinner than a pen and lighter than conventional LCD panels.
